What it does

Commvault Grid is backup storage and compute in one scale-out cluster: you add nodes as data grows, and the cluster spreads data across them so it survives a failed drive or node. Commvault's documentation lists it as "formerly Commvault HyperScale X", and the product family is now called Commvault On-Prem.

It comes two ways. The Grid Appliance arrives pre-imaged and Commvault supports both hardware and software. The Grid reference architecture runs on validated servers from Commvault's hardware partners, with the server vendor supporting the hardware.

Key facts

  • Runs on VaultOS, Commvault's hardened Linux.
  • Uses erasure coding to protect data across nodes.
  • Commvault Flex (formerly HyperScale Flex) separates compute from external storage for very large environments; Commvault Edge (formerly HyperScale Edge) is for remote sites and smaller offices.
  • The rename appears in the documentation between releases 11.42 and 11.44, in 2026.
