Resources / Commvault decoder
Commvault, in plain words.
Commvault renames products often and documents them for engineers. Here's what each one is, what it used to be called and when you'd need it, from the team that runs it every day.
Platform
The platform, its government cloud and the hardware it runs on.
Commvault Cloud
Formerly Metallic
Commvault's platform for backup, recovery and cyber resilience across on-premises systems, SaaS apps and the major clouds. It replaced the separate Metallic brand in 2023.
Commvault Cloud for Government
The SaaS version of Commvault Cloud for U.S. federal, state, local and education customers, with FedRAMP High and GovRAMP High authorization. Often called Commvault GovCloud.
Commvault Cloud Unity
The name of Commvault's November 2025 platform release, which combined data security, cyber recovery and identity resilience in Commvault Cloud. It's a release, not a product you buy.
Commvault Grid
Formerly HyperScale X
Commvault's scale-out appliance and reference design for running backup storage and compute on-premises. It was called HyperScale X until 2026.
Arlie
The AI assistant built into Commvault Cloud. It helps diagnose failed jobs, answers how-to questions and walks admins through tasks.
Cyber recovery
Isolated copies, clean recovery and early warning of an attack.
Commvault AirGap
Formerly Air Gap Protect, Metallic Recovery Reserve
Commvault's managed cloud storage for isolated, immutable backup copies that ransomware in your network can't reach. It was called Air Gap Protect, and before that Metallic Recovery Reserve.
Commvault Cleanroom
Formerly Commvault Cloud Cleanroom Recovery
An isolated recovery environment, created on demand, where you test cyber recovery, investigate an attack and restore clean systems without touching production. Formerly Cleanroom Recovery.
Cloud Rewind
Formerly Appranix
Recovers whole cloud applications on AWS, Azure and Google Cloud to a point in time, rebuilding their configuration as well as their data. It came from Commvault's 2024 acquisition of Appranix.
Auto Recovery
Commvault's disaster recovery orchestration: it replicates systems to a recovery site and automates failover, failback and recovery testing.
Synthetic Recovery
After an attack, it builds one clean recovery point from the clean versions of files across several backups, leaving out the compromised ones. Not the same as a synthetic full backup.
Threat Scan
Scans backup data for malware, encrypted files and unusual changes, so you can find the last clean copy before you restore.
Threatwise
Formerly Metallic ThreatWise, TrapX
Cyber deception: decoys that look like real servers, devices and backup systems, so attackers who touch them give themselves away before they encrypt or steal data.
Workloads
Protection for Microsoft 365, identity, Salesforce and cloud data.
Microsoft 365 backup
Commvault's SaaS backup for Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, with copies kept outside your Microsoft tenant, including for GCC and GCC High.
Active Directory and Entra ID recovery
Backup, granular restore and automated forest recovery for Active Directory, Entra ID and, more recently, Okta. Commvault sells it as Backup & Recovery for Active Directory.
Salesforce backup
Commvault's SaaS backup for Salesforce production and sandbox orgs: records, files, metadata and the relationships between them, including Government Cloud.
Clumio
Agentless backup for AWS data such as S3, DynamoDB and RDS, and now Google Cloud Storage. Commvault acquired Clumio in 2024.
Data security
Finding, governing and reusing the data you protect.
Data Posture 360
Formerly Risk Analysis
Finds and classifies sensitive data, such as personal data, intellectual property and secrets, in live and backup data, and flags data that's overexposed or kept too long. Formerly Risk Analysis.
Data Access Manager (Satori)
Formerly Satori Cyber
Controls who can query which data in databases, data warehouses and AI pipelines, masking or filtering sensitive fields as they're queried. It came from Commvault's 2025 acquisition of Satori Cyber.
Data Rooms
A controlled space where authorized people find and prepare backup data to share with AI platforms and data lakes, with classification and compliance controls built in.
Architecture
The components and terms you meet when you run Commvault yourself.
CommCell
A CommCell is one complete Commvault environment: a single CommServe, one or more MediaAgents, and the clients they protect.
CommServe
The CommServe is the central server of a Commvault environment. It schedules and tracks every job and holds the database of configuration, security and backup history, so no restore can start without it.
MediaAgent
A MediaAgent moves backup data between the systems being protected and storage, and manages the disk, cloud and tape libraries it writes to.
Command Center
Command Center is Commvault's web console for setting up and running backups, restores, storage and security. It replaced the older Java CommCell Console for most work.
Backup plans
Formerly Server plan, Storage policy
A backup plan bundles what to back up, how often, where copies go and how long they're kept. It replaced storage policies, and was called a server plan before release 11.38.
Releases: Innovation and LTS
Commvault ships Innovation releases monthly, each supported for two months, and a Long-Term Support release once a year, supported for two and a half years. Most organizations should stay on LTS.
