Commvault decoder/Architecture
What is a MediaAgent in Commvault?
A MediaAgent moves backup data between the systems being protected and storage, and manages the disk, cloud and tape libraries it writes to.
- Delivered as
- Software on servers you run, or nodes of a Commvault Grid
What it does
Commvault's documentation calls the MediaAgent the data transmission manager. When a client backs up, data flows through a MediaAgent, which deduplicates it and writes it to storage; restores flow back the same way.
Most environments have several MediaAgents, for capacity and so one failing doesn't stop backups. In a Commvault Grid, each node acts as a MediaAgent.
Key facts
- A CommCell can have many MediaAgents.
- MediaAgents hold the deduplication database for the storage they manage.
- Their logs are one of the first places to look when a backup job fails.
