Resources / Comparisons
Commvault compared, by people who run it.
Commvault side by side with the backup platforms people shortlist against it, sourced from each vendor's own pages, NIST and the FedRAMP Marketplace.
The comparisons
Commvault vs
Veeam
Both are Leaders in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant and both will protect a typical data center well. Veeam is usually quicker to stand up and easier to staff for a virtualized estate. Commvault fits better when the estate is mixed, when you need a FedRAMP High SaaS option, or when you want isolated storage and cleanroom recovery run as a service.
Commvault vs
Rubrik
Rubrik sells itself to security teams: simple to run, strong on threat hunting and identity, and backed by a recovery warranty. Commvault covers more kinds of systems and more ways to deploy, and its government cloud is authorized at FedRAMP High where Rubrik's is Moderate.
Commvault vs
Cohesity
Since buying Veritas' data protection business in December 2024, Cohesity sells two platforms: its own DataProtect and NetBackup. Both are actively developed, but its newest cyber features are DataProtect-only. Commvault is one platform across SaaS, software and appliances, with a FedRAMP High government cloud.
Commvault vs
Druva
Druva is SaaS only: there are no backup servers or storage to run, and it's strong on laptops and SaaS apps. Commvault offers SaaS too, but also runs as software or appliances, which matters for large on-premises systems, fast local restores and FedRAMP High.
Commvault vs
Microsoft 365 Backup
Microsoft 365 Backup is fast rollback inside Microsoft 365 for Exchange, OneDrive and SharePoint. Commvault Cloud for Microsoft 365 keeps a separate copy outside your tenant and covers Teams too. They aren't either/or: Commvault can use Microsoft's backup storage as a premium tier.
For agencies and contractors
FedRAMP, at a glance
Each vendor's government cloud as the FedRAMP Marketplace lists it in November 2026. For CMMC, DFARS 252.204-7012 expects cloud services that hold CUI to meet FedRAMP Moderate or equivalent, so Moderate is usually enough. High matters for agencies with high-impact systems.
