Commvault decoder/Cyber recovery
What is Commvault Synthetic Recovery?
After an attack, it builds one clean recovery point from the clean versions of files across several backups, leaving out the compromised ones. Not the same as a synthetic full backup.

What it does
Ransomware often sits in an environment for days before anyone notices, so the last clean backup can be old. Synthetic Recovery looks across multiple backups, takes the newest clean version of each file and assembles them into a single recovery point, so you don't lose everything since the last fully clean backup.
It's a different thing from a synthetic full backup, the long-standing Commvault feature that builds a new full backup from earlier ones to save backup time.
Key facts
- Uses Threat Scan results to decide which versions are clean.
- Was in early access at launch, with general availability targeted for early 2026; confirm its status in your deployment.
Related
- Threat ScanScans backup data for malware, encrypted files and unusual changes, so you can find the last clean copy before you restore.
- Commvault CleanroomAn isolated recovery environment, created on demand, where you test cyber recovery, investigate an attack and restore clean systems without touching production. Formerly Cleanroom Recovery.
- Commvault Cloud UnityThe name of Commvault's November 2025 platform release, which combined data security, cyber recovery and identity resilience in Commvault Cloud. It's a release, not a product you buy.
