Comparisons/Druva

Commvault vs Druva

Druva is SaaS only: there are no backup servers or storage to run, and it's strong on laptops and SaaS apps. Commvault offers SaaS too, but also runs as software or appliances, which matters for large on-premises systems, fast local restores and FedRAMP High.

Which to pick

Pick Druva if…

  • You want no backup infrastructure at all, and a small IT team.
  • Laptop and endpoint backup is a big part of the job: it's where Druva started.
  • You protect Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 as much as servers.
  • Per-user or credit-based licensing fits your budget better than capacity.

Pick Commvault if…

  • Large on-premises databases or file systems need fast local restores rather than pulling everything back from the cloud.
  • You need FedRAMP High: Druva's government cloud is FedRAMP Moderate.
  • You want the option to run some of it yourself, or to keep copies on storage you own.
  • You run older platforms such as IBM i, AIX or Solaris.

Our take

As a Commvault MSP

We run Commvault for a living, so weigh this accordingly. Druva does one thing very well: it takes backup infrastructure off your plate entirely. For a lean IT team with lots of laptops and SaaS apps, that's hard to beat.

The trade-off shows up with large on-premises systems. Restoring a multi-terabyte database from the cloud takes longer than restoring from local storage, and some organizations need copies on storage they own. Commvault does both SaaS and local, and its government cloud is authorized at FedRAMP High.

Questions

Yes, at Moderate. Druva GovCloud runs on AWS GovCloud and has held a FedRAMP authorization since 2017. Commvault Cloud for Government is authorized at High.

It's built on AWS, but since March 2025 customers can choose Azure Storage as the backup target.

Yes, Commvault protects endpoints too. Druva is the more established choice when endpoints are most of the job.

Usually, yes. DFARS 252.204-7012 expects cloud services that hold CUI to meet FedRAMP Moderate or equivalent.
