As a Commvault MSP
We run Commvault for a living, so weigh this accordingly. Rubrik is a strong product with a clear story for security teams, and it's easier to pick up than Commvault. If your estate is VMware, cloud and SaaS and your security team is driving the decision, it deserves a serious look.
Where Commvault wins in the deals we see is breadth and government. It protects more kinds of systems, runs on hardware you already own, and its government cloud is authorized at FedRAMP High.
On the warranty: read the conditions. It's a sound signal of confidence, but it applies only to certain editions and sizes, and it doesn't replace a tested recovery plan.

No. Rubrik Security Cloud – Government is FedRAMP Moderate on the FedRAMP Marketplace (authorized December 2024). Rubrik says it's hosted on FedRAMP High infrastructure, which describes the hosting rather than Rubrik's own authorization. Commvault Cloud for Government is authorized at High.
Usually, yes. DFARS 252.204-7012 expects cloud services that hold CUI to meet FedRAMP Moderate or equivalent. FedRAMP High matters for agencies with high-impact systems and some defense workloads.
Rubrik, by most user reviews. Commvault covers more ground and takes more skill; a managed service closes that gap.
Not a dollar-value one. Rubrik's warranty pays up to $10M under set conditions. Commvault sells a Ransomware Recovery Protection Plan instead: yearly recovery assessment and testing and a 24/7 recovery response team, on top of features such as AirGap and Cleanroom.
