Comparisons/Veeam

Commvault vs Veeam

Both are Leaders in Gartner's 2026 Magic Quadrant and both will protect a typical data center well. Veeam is usually quicker to stand up and easier to staff for a virtualized estate. Commvault fits better when the estate is mixed, when you need a FedRAMP High SaaS option, or when you want isolated storage and cleanroom recovery run as a service.

Which to pick

Pick Veeam if…

  • Your estate is mostly VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix or Proxmox, and you have an in-house team to run it.
  • You want the fastest route to working backups and the biggest pool of admins to hire from.
  • You're moving off VMware to a less common hypervisor: Veeam lists 14 as of v13.1.
  • One portable license per workload suits how you buy.

Pick Commvault if…

  • You need a FedRAMP High SaaS option: Commvault Cloud for Government is authorized at High, and Veeam has no FedRAMP Marketplace listing of its own.
  • Your estate mixes virtual machines with physical servers, large databases or older platforms like IBM i, AIX and Solaris.
  • You want SaaS and self-run backups in one console rather than two products.
  • You want an isolated vault and cleanroom recovery that the vendor, or an MSP, runs for you.

Our take

As a Commvault MSP

We run Commvault for a living, so weigh this accordingly. Veeam is a very good product. For a VMware or Hyper-V shop with its own team, it's often the faster start, and we'd tell a customer that.

Where we see Commvault win is mixed estates and government. One platform covers the virtual machines, the physical database servers, the old AIX box and Microsoft 365, and Commvault Cloud for Government gives agencies and contractors a FedRAMP High option that Veeam doesn't list.

The usual complaint about Commvault, that it takes more skill to run, is fair. Closing that gap is what a managed service is for, and it's the reason KELYN exists.

Moving from Veeam to Commvault

Most teams run both side by side: new backups go to Commvault, and the Veeam restore points stay until their retention runs out. That avoids converting old backups at all.

Plan the move by workload, not by site. Start with whatever Veeam covers least well for you, prove restores in Commvault, then move the rest.

Questions

Veeam has no listing of its own on the FedRAMP Marketplace as of November 2026. Agencies use it as software they run themselves or through partners: Constellation GovCloud, which offers Veeam, is FedRAMP Moderate. Commvault Cloud for Government is FedRAMP High.

Most reviewers find Veeam quicker to set up and learn, and there are more Veeam admins to hire. Commvault does more, which takes more skill to run; a managed service takes that work off your team.

Either can support NIST SP 800-171 backup and recovery requirements as software you run. If backups hold CUI in a cloud service, DFARS 252.204-7012 expects FedRAMP Moderate or equivalent; Commvault Cloud for Government is authorized at High.

Yes, and many organizations do during a move. Some keep Veeam for virtual machines and use Commvault for databases, physical servers and SaaS apps, though two tools means two consoles and two sets of skills.
