Commvault decoder/Architecture
What is a CommCell in Commvault?
A CommCell is one complete Commvault environment: a single CommServe, one or more MediaAgents, and the clients they protect.

- A concept, not a product
What it does
Everything Commvault manages belongs to a CommCell. Each one has exactly one CommServe at its center, MediaAgents that move data to storage, and clients, the machines and applications being protected.
Large organizations sometimes run more than one CommCell, for example one per region or one for a classified network, and manage them together from the Commvault Console.
Key facts
- One CommServe per CommCell.
- Settings such as lockout, password rules and two-factor authentication are set at the CommCell level.
Related
- CommServeThe CommServe is the central server of a Commvault environment. It schedules and tracks every job and holds the database of configuration, security and backup history, so no restore can start without it.
- MediaAgentA MediaAgent moves backup data between the systems being protected and storage, and manages the disk, cloud and tape libraries it writes to.
- Command CenterCommand Center is Commvault's web console for setting up and running backups, restores, storage and security. It replaced the older Java CommCell Console for most work.
