Commvault decoder/Architecture
What is the CommServe in Commvault?
The CommServe is the central server of a Commvault environment. It schedules and tracks every job and holds the database of configuration, security and backup history, so no restore can start without it.

- Software on a server or VM you run, or run by Commvault in SaaS
What it does
The CommServe coordinates everything in a CommCell: it starts jobs, tracks where every backup copy is, holds security settings and keeps job history in its SQL Server database. Command Center is installed with it by default.
Because restores depend on it, the CommServe needs its own disaster recovery plan: regular disaster recovery backups of its database, a copy somewhere ransomware can't reach, and ideally a standby CommServe. Attackers who understand backups go after it first.
Key facts
- There is exactly one CommServe per CommCell.
- Its disaster recovery backups are what you restore first after losing it.
- Hardening it matters: keep it off the production domain where you can, limit who can reach it, and require MFA.
